A regular Tuesday turned into an exciting day for the children and staff of Shema Kolainu "Hear Our Voices", School & Center for Children with Autism, as Dr. Joshua Weinstein, CEO & Founder welcomed and led Governor and Presidential candidate, John Kasich on a tour of the school!
During Governor Kasich's visit, he met with some of the children and staff and took a tour of the Brooklyn school.
He was interested in learning what some of the biggest challenges were that the teachers and administrators faced, but not surprised when "funding" was at the top of the list.
Gili Rechany, education director explained, "We focus on the individuality of each child, setting goals for education; communication; socialization". And Suri Gruen, program director indicated that "No matter where they are on the spectrum of society, with the proper coaching, each child is capable of
performing in a positive and productive manner".
Before Governor Kasich's departure, he was presented with a beautiful painting made by some of the students, of an elaborately decorated picture of the White House, adorned with glitter and an abundance of vibrant colors! He even took some questions from the students, such as " What's your favorite color
John Kasich"?... one boy yelled out. "Blue" he shouted! "and what's your favorite sport"... "golf"!... the Governor proclaimed.
Governor
Kasich seemed to enjoy the time spent with the students and staff and appreciated and interested in
Shema Kolainu's tremendous work for the the autistic children and their families.
"We proudly welcomed Governor Kasich to Shema Kolainu and where our students enjoyed interacting with him. His visit to our school is indicative of his concern and compassion to children with autism. Hopefully, this visit commenced a conversation regarding the role of government on a national scale to address the epidemic rise of autism being diagnosed" said founder Dr. Joshua Weinstein.
"I'm glad John Kasich was in Boro Park to visit Shema Kolainu-Hear Our Voices so that he got to witness firsthand how the children's' lives are elevated every day--I saw compassion in Kasich's eyes and a genuine interest in learning more about programs for children with autism said Ezra Friedlander, CEO of The Friedlander Group who helped coordinate the visit to the school.
